The deaths occurred in August and September at the private My Quynh Safari Park in Long An Province and the Vuon Xoai Zoo in Dong Nai, near Ho Chi Minh City, the official Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
The National Centre for Animal Health Diagnosis’ test results state that the H5N1 type A virus is to blame for the animals’ deaths, according to VNA. When AFP contacted the zoos, they declined to comment. The VNA article also stated that no zoo employees who worked closely with the animals suffered respiratory issues.
An NGO dedicated to animal conservation, Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV), said that by the end of 2023, there were 385 tigers in Vietnam that were kept in captivity.
