Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), urged the government to postpone the planned constitutional changes until after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference is over.
The JUI-F leader also asked the opposition to put an end to their protests in order to preserve political stability during the international event, during a press conference in the capital on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media, Fazlur Rehman emphasized the need for a more thoughtful process when making constitutional revisions, using the 18th Amendment as an example, which required nine months of debate before all sides were able to come to an understanding.
He said, “I question why there is such urgency to make constitutional changes under an emergency. The government told me that these amendments are being rushed.”
