The number of deaths was confirmed by local police to BBC Gujarati, and they added that rescue efforts are still in progress.
The incident on Vadodara’s Harni Lake has an unknown cause at this time.
According to local authorities, there were about 27 persons on board the boat.
Up to seven people have been rescued, according to Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, who spoke with the BBC. They are currently receiving care at a nearby hospital.
Additionally, he claimed that the victims had not received life jackets for the boat ride, as reported by Reuters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief,” in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The state government would give 400,000 rupees ($4,800; £3,800) to the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees ($600; £475) to the families of those injured in the accident, according to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
In India, where boats are frequently overcrowded, badly maintained, and devoid of safety equipment, boat accidents are not unusual.
