NFL prospects are frequently compared to NFL greats from their respective college programs, but being compared to the GOAT is a different story.
J.J. McCarthy led the Michigan Wolverines to a 15-0 season that culminated in a national championship in the College Football Playoff, positioning him as a potential first-round draft selection in April.
McCarthy demonstrated his flair for the dramatic in his two biggest drives to date.
With less than five minutes remaining in the Rose Bowl, trailing Alabama 20–13, he led his team down the field for a touchdown that tied the score; Blake Corum scored the winning touchdown in overtime.
It was deja vu all over again, with a chance to secure the national championship against Washington in the closing moments.
Corum believes McCarthy will “kill it” in the NFL because of this.
“J.J. is simply an amazing quarterback,” Corum recently said to Fox News Digital. “Wants to improve, wants to learn, and won’t give up until he does. He’s a terrific quarterback and leader, so I believe he should be selected in the first round of the draft, regardless of the round.”
Returning to the point of comparison, every receiver for Alabama is compared to Julio Jones, and similarly, every quarterback for USC is grouped together.
However, things are a little different for Michigan.
According to Michigan standout Blake Corrum, the deal with Celsius was a “signal from God.”
That’s because the greatest ever attended Michigan as an undergraduate. Therefore, there is only one quarterback that comes to mind when comparing any Michigan quarterback to another, and it will always be an unfair comparison.
However, Corum isn’t hesitant to offer that kind of high praise to his quarterback of the past few years.
“I believe his career will last a very long time. We’ll see, maybe a Tom Brady,” he remarked.
McCarthy started 29 games as Michigan’s full-time quarterback over the course of two seasons, finishing 68.5% of his passes for 5,710 yards, 44 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. To be fair, Corum has all better stats than Brady, even though McCarthy has scored eight touchdowns on the ground the past two seasons.
