The epicenter was discovered in East Java province, 132 kilometers north of Tuban, according to BMKG.
Multiple posts on social media by residents in those areas show that the earthquakes were felt powerfully throughout East Java, including the capital Surabaya and cities in neighboring provinces.
According to the BMKG, the earthquake has no possibility of causing a tsunami. No initial reports of damage were obtained.
An earlier earthquake in Java, Indonesia’s main island, killed at least 44 people.
“Dozens of individuals have been killed. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of houses have been damaged. So far, 44 people have died,” Adam, a spokesman for the West Javan town of Cianjur, who goes by one name.
