Hours after the nation removed a social media ban that led to fatal anti-corruption rallies, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday.
Security personnel used rubber bullets and tear gas to scatter the demonstrators on Monday, killing at least 19.
Take a look at what transpired.
What caused the protests to start?
The protest was sparked by the Nepalese government’s decision to restrict access to a number of social media sites that failed to register with the authorities by the deadline.
The government said it was tightening down on platform abuse when it announced the ban last week, claiming that certain users with phony identification were conducting crimes, spreading hate and rumors, and upsetting social peace.
