KARACHI: According to police, an accused facing murder charges disappeared from police custody on the premises of Karachi’s City Court on Tuesday.
The accused Shaukat was detained on murder charges by Awami Colony Police Station officers, they said.
Police said that a handcuff was not securely attached, allowing the accused to flee.
According to authorities, three officers were there with the accused when he departed the courtroom.
Following the incident, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Ramzan and constables Shamim and Ayub were suspended and arrested.
This isn’t the first time a criminal suspect has escaped from police custody.
There have been at least three such events in Sindh this year alone.
An accused recently fled from police custody after officers made a stopover at a highway hotel.
Hanif, a highly wanted suspect, was linked to a banned organization and wanted in six separate incidents. Three cases were filed against him across Sindh.
The suspect was brought from Karachi’s Central Jail to the anti-terrorism court in Khairpur for a hearing.
According to police sources, after returning to Karachi and stopping at a hotel for supper, the suspect fled under the excuse of going to the restroom. The officers remained outside the bathroom.
Similarly, another accused in a narcotics case being held in Karachi’s Malir jail recently escaped from a courtroom in the city.
