Carter’s official website said that he “died peacefully” at his New York residence on Tuesday.
His most well-known roles were as Sergeant Joe Broadhurst on McCloud and Colonel Tigh in the original Battlestar Galactica series.
Over the course of his multi-decade career, he broke down numerous barriers. In 1956, for example, he became one of the first black actors to land a regular role in a TV sitcom when he played Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show.
Before he played Sergeant Joe Broadhurst in the US police drama series Company of Killers in 1970, he had a prominent part in Hollywood as Detective Max Jaffie.
