Rahmanullah Lakanwal — the Afghan national accused of shooting two US National Guard members near the White House on Wednesday — previously worked alongside the CIA in Afghanistan, US officials have confirmed.
The victims, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe from West Virginia, were critically injured in the attack.
US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said authorities are hoping both survive, noting that murder charges may follow if their conditions worsen.
Lakanwal arrived in the United States in 2021 under a special immigration program created for Afghans who assisted US forces during America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
At Thursday’s press briefing, Pirro and FBI Director Kash Patel stated that there is verified evidence showing Lakanwal had been involved with “partner forces” supporting the US during his time in Afghanistan.
