The UN-approved foreign minister of Afghanistan made his first trip to India on Thursday since the Taliban regained control of the country in 2021 after US-led soldiers left.
Pakistan, India’s neighbor and Afghanistan’s bitter foe, is expected to keep a careful eye on Amir Khan Muttaqi’s journey, which was made possible after the UN Security Council gave him a travel waiver, as New Delhi strengthens its ties with the Taliban regime.
Muttaqi was given a “warm welcome” by Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, who stated in a statement, “We look forward to engaging discussions with him on bilateral relations and regional issues.”
Muttaqi met with Vikram Misri, India’s top career diplomat, in Dubai in January.
