As time runs short for survivors, who face a dark future as international aid groups warn of depleting finances for food, housing, and medications, rescue teams fought to recover bodies from the rubble of homes destroyed in Afghanistan’s earthquakes this week.
According to the Taliban administration, search efforts continued late into Wednesday in the mountainous eastern regions affected by the earthquake as more bodies were recovered. The death toll had surpassed 1,457, but precise figures had not yet been determined.
In the worst-hit region of Kunar, survivor Aalem Jan remarked, “Everything we had has been destroyed.”
All of our valuables were lost when our house fell. These cloths on our backs are all that’s left.
