President Donald Trump stated Thursday during a news conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the United States wants to retake control of Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base, while an Afghan official denied the necessity of any US involvement.
After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the ancient Soviet-built runway served as the primary base for American forces in the mountainous South Asian country until their 2021 withdrawal, which resulted in the Islamist Taliban movement seizing control.
Regarding Bagram, Trump stated, “We’re trying to get it back,” referring to its “strategic location near China.” “We want that base back.”
However, Kabul stated that it was not amenable to any such agreement.
