Prior to today’s 12:30 pm session of the parliament (both chambers), a number of political heavyweights met with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman after the current government was unable to secure the necessary number of signatures for its proposed constitutional reforms.
This comes about as a result of the administration of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s inability to persuade Fazl to endorse the idea of raising the retirement age or prolonging the tenure of judges.
The National Assembly (NA) session began late on Sunday night, after several delays caused by talks between the administration and the opposition. The session had been scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Concurrently, the federal cabinet meeting that was scheduled to approve the proposed modification was postponed yesterday and is scheduled to take place today.
