During the attacker’s rampage of attempted carjackings, another man was shot and died.
According to police, Mike Gill, the former president’s chief of staff at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, was shot in Washington, DC, last Monday as a guy attempted to get into a car and drive away.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV was involved in an incident that lasted for more than three minutes.
Authorities said that the attacker later attempted to steal a Mercedes but was unsuccessful.
According to an incident report, the attacker then went up to a man and woman and demanded their car keys. After that, he shot and killed 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez Jr. and drove off in a stolen Chrysler 200.
After finding the suspect near an SUV that had been disabled and discovering it had been stolen, police named the man as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham.
While the policemen searched the area for the occupants of the vehicle, Cunningham approached them brandishing two pistols, according to the police.
In Maryland, Cunningham was also charged with two additional carjackings.
Kristina Gill paid tribute to her husband by saying, “His sudden departure has left a void in our lives that can never be filled.”
She described him as “not only a devoted husband and father but also a cherished son, brother, and friend” .
As an active member of his church, Mr. Gill cultivated friendships and mentorships with colleagues, coached his daughter’s football team, served on the District of Columbia Board of Elections, and demonstrated a commitment to bettering the lives of others, according to Mrs. Gill.
On Sunday, Donald Trump honored Mr. Gill with a post on Truth Social.
