Materia AI has received a UK Government grant to accelerate ReGenTrace AI, its platform for a circular electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem. This milestone is important because it modernises how EV batteries are recovered, processed, and reintegrated into the supply chain at the end of their life.
The grant comes through Innovate UK’s Catalyst for Early-Stage Startups programme, which supports frontier technologies such as AI, advanced engineering, and connectivity. In addition, the funding recognises Materia AI’s potential to reshape the UK’s battery ecosystem.
Building Digital Infrastructure for a Circular Battery Future
Under the programme, Materia AI will create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) of ReGenTrace AI. This will lay the foundation for a scalable, data-driven circular EV battery ecosystem in the UK.
With EV adoption growing rapidly, the number of end-of-life batteries is expected to rise sharply over the next decade. Therefore, a circular supply chain will be crucial for long-term industrial resilience and efficient use of critical minerals.
As a result, ReGenTrace AI aims to make battery recycling automated, transparent, and intelligence-led.
How ReGenTrace AI Works
ReGenTrace AI is a cloud-native platform that combines machine learning, predictive modeling, and blockchain-based traceability. Together, these technologies create a unified digital backbone for the EV battery circular economy.
Planned modules include:
- AI-powered optimisation of battery collection logistics
- Real-time materials identification
- Black mass yield prediction
- AI-guided materials development
Additionally, the platform uses blockchain to ensure material provenance, alongside market forecasting, lifecycle assessment, and carbon optimisation tools. By unifying recycling, logistics, and materials recovery, Materia AI helps recyclers scale efficiently, reduce costs, improve material recovery rates, and strengthen ESG compliance.
Strengthening the UK’s Domestic EV Battery Ecosystem
A core goal of ReGenTrace AI is to build a domestic EV battery circular economy. Currently, much value from end-of-life batteries is lost due to inefficient recovery or export of materials. Consequently, a UK-based ecosystem would retain critical minerals domestically, reduce reliance on volatile global supply chains, and lower carbon emissions from long-distance transport and primary extraction.
Moreover, it promotes industrial growth by connecting recyclers, manufacturers, and researchers through shared digital infrastructure. Platforms like ReGenTrace AI ensure materials, data, and value circulate efficiently within national borders, boosting energy security and supporting net-zero goals.
Validation and Next Steps
The first ReGenTrace AI modules are expected to be operational by the end of March. After that, Materia AI will validate the platform through an MVP deployment at a UK battery recycler.
This testing phase will allow the team to refine the platform and demonstrate how AI can improve efficiency, transparency, and resilience in the EV battery circular economy.
Ultimately, as the UK faces a growing wave of end-of-life EV batteries, Materia AI’s initiative highlights the vital role of AI-led infrastructure in building a transparent, circular, and future-ready battery supply chain.
