Over 14,000 people have died in the fighting, eight million have been forced to evacuate their homes, and the UN has warned that this might lead to the worst famine catastrophe in history.
The Sudanese champions have managed to stay active on the field despite the suspension of their home league by signing a contract with the Tanzanian Football Federation (TFF) to compete in the premier division of Tanzania starting in August.
According to Dr. Hassan Ali, secretary general of Al Hilal, “we are playing during this very sad moment to distract our people from the war,” he said to news Sport Africa.

The reason Sudan's most successful football team, Al Hilal, continues to play is to provide "a distraction" for people back home, even after a civil war broke out about a year ago.
