Alec Baldwin has opened up about the serious impact the tragic Rust shooting has had on his health and well-being. The actor, known for 30 Rock, said the aftermath has taken a toll on every part of his life—spiritually, financially, and professionally.
Speaking on the Dopey podcast, Baldwin reflected on the October 2021 shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. He revealed that the experience has aged him a decade.
“If I told you what my health conditions have been since October 21st of 2021, it’s taken 10 years off my life,” Baldwin said. He added that there was a time he could barely move and needed daily naps for an entire year.
The tragedy happened when Baldwin discharged a prop gun containing live ammunition on the Rust set, fatally injuring Hutchins. He faced two involuntary manslaughter charges. The first, filed in January 2023, was later dropped. A second case in January 2024 was dismissed with prejudice in July, meaning it cannot be reopened.
Baldwin has also been open about his mental health struggles. On the reality show The Baldwins, he revealed living with post-traumatic stress disorder. He told his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, “I don’t know where I’d be if I didn’t have you and these kids going through this.”
Hilaria added that her husband has experienced survivor’s guilt and even suicidal thoughts following the incident.
Baldwin’s story shows how deeply traumatic events can affect both physical and mental health. Even public figures are not immune to the long-term consequences of workplace accidents.
