The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) survey on Islamabad’s water quality issues was discussed in a June 2024 Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources meeting presided over by Senator Shahadat Awan. The secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources shared the survey.
Out of 127 tubewells that were surveyed, 105 were found to be safe and 22 to be unsafe, the secretary said the committee. There were 39 dangerous and 69 safe water filtration plants out of a total of 108.
Of the twelve waterworks, five were dangerous and seven were safe. The worst affected locations are rural ones, where 33 of the 41 water supply sources were deemed hazardous.
The secretary claims that out of the 37 criteria examined, nitrates and microorganisms were the two main pollutants.
