In one of the most extensive instances of state surveillance outside of China, Pakistan is eavesdropping on millions of its residents using a phone-tapping system and a Chinese-built internet firewall that filters social media, according to Amnesty International.
According to a British news service, the rights group stated in a report published Tuesday that Pakistan’s expanding monitoring network was developed with both Chinese and Western technology and that it fueled a broad assault on free expression and dissent.
According to Amnesty International, Pakistan’s Lawful Intercept Management System (LIMS) allows the government to monitor at least 4 million mobile phones simultaneously, and a firewall called WMS 2.0 that examines internet traffic can stop up to 2 million active sessions at once.
