WASHINGTON: Following Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada’s recent public declaration that she would vote against President Biden, the prospects of Adeel Mangi, a reputable Pakistani-American judge nominated to the federal appeals court, have significantly decreased.
Late on Wednesday, Rosen declared her opposition to Biden’s most recent nomination for the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia, following the announcements of two other Democrats who would vote with Senate Republicans to reject his confirmation.
Her declaration might be sufficient to derail Mangi’s candidacy in the narrowly divided Senate. With a 51-49 Democratic majority in the chamber, Mangi doesn’t seem to have enough votes to be confirmed in the absence of a Republican defect or defection.
“Given the concerns I’ve heard from law enforcement in Nevada, I am not planning to vote to confirm this nominee,” Rosen said in a press release.
Her declaration came after that of Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a fellow Democrat from Nevada, who last week brought up Mangi’s membership in a criminal justice reform organization that fights for the rights of families impacted by mass incarceration.
A number of law enforcement organizations have declared their opposition to Mangi and their disapproval of his connection with the Alliance of Families for Justice, including the National Sheriffs’ Association and the National Association of Police Organizations.
