Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on Monday during an oath-taking ceremony presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa at the top court in Islamabad.
The development follows former President Arif Alvi’s approval last week of Justice Afghan’s appointment to the country’s top court under Article 175(A) of the Constitution.
Meanwhile, The News reported last week that Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar is set to become acting Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) under Article 196 of the Constitution, following Alvi’s permission.
Following the permission of the former president, Justice Malik Shehzad Ahmed Khan was sworn in as chief justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday.
With Afghan’s appointment as a supreme court judge, the apex court now has 14 judges, with three additional open positions.
He has joined CJP Isa, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Amin-ud-Din, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha A Malik, Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Shahid Waheed, Justice Mussarat Hilali, and Justice Irfan Khan.
