According to officials, at least 12 people lost their lives as a result of heavy rain that flooded streets, disrupted transportation, and left inhabitants stuck for hours in Kolkata, eastern India, and the neighboring districts ahead of a major festival.
According to HR Biswas, the regional chief of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Kolkata, the most of the rain, up to 251.6 mm (9.9 inches) in a 24-hour period, fell in the early hours of Tuesday and was the heaviest to hit the city since 1988.
According to police, electrocution was the primary cause of nine fatalities in Kolkata. They added that two persons drowned.
Preparations for the impending Durga Puja were severely hampered by the rains, which brought the state capital to a complete halt.
