Fixing the term of Pakistan’s chief justice is a suggestion made by Advisor to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Saturday, as the federal government considers amending the legislation pertaining to the appointment of judges.
The president of the PML-N Punjab chapter stated, “The term of the chief justice should be fixed,” on the Geo News show “Naya Pakistan.”
“The tenure of the head of any institution in the nation is fixed.”
He continued by saying that CJPs had taken over workplaces for a mere 14 days in the past.
The PM’s adviser remarks were made the day after Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar made suggestions about proposing constitutional changes to alter the custom of choosing Supreme Court justices.
He said this during a meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), which was chaired by CJP Isa on Friday, to consider suggested changes to the organization’s 2010 guidelines. Among those in attendance at the huddle was the law minister.
The reforms aim to do away with the practice of appointing the most senior judge as chief justice of high courts, as well as the automatic promotion of chief justices of high courts to the highest court.
