KARACHI: On Tuesday night, during a gunfight with members of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in the Mochko neighborhood of the city, the “mastermind” of the terror plot that targeted the Karachi Police Office (KPO) in February 2023 was slain.
The mastermind, Omar Farooq, was slain during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) close to the Northern Bypass in Mochko, according to the CTD.
On February 17, of the previous year, three terrorists wearing suicide jackets broke into the multi-story KPO building.
All three terrorists had been eliminated during the operation, which lasted many hours, and four people—two police officers and a sub-inspector from the Sindh Rangers—had accepted death. In addition to police and Rangers troops, at least 17 other persons were hurt in the terror incident.
Speaking with media at Civil Hospital, CTD DIG Asif Aijaz Shaikh revealed that the terrorist who was killed had ties to the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). “The KPO was masterminded by Omar Farooq,” he continued.
The terrorist who was killed also had a motorcycle and a weapon found in his possession.
A spokesperson for CTD claimed in a statement that ten cases had been filed against the terrorist in 2014, and that he was engaged in the 2013 Abbas Town bombing.
The dead terrorist was acquitted and put to prison in 2014, the statement said. He then traveled to Afghanistan.
At the Mubina Town Police Station, Sachal, CTD, Ittihad Town, Surjani Town, and Gulshan-e-Maymar, cases were filed against him.
