A stunning comeback for the modest all-rounder since his return during the Ashes series last year, Marsh was confirmed as captain during Wednesday’s selection announcement.
He has already shown himself to be a well-liked and capable captain at the age of 32, leading the team to victory over co-hosts of the Twenty20 World Cup, the West Indies, and New Zealand.
His laid-back style fits well with the Australian team, which has improved since losing their volatile head coach, Justin Langer. However, despite the selectors’ confidence in his leadership, Marsh stays grounded.
Telling reporters, “I’ve learned not to stray too far from who I am,” Marsh said. “While there’s plenty of preparation ahead for the World Cup, once we’re there, it’s about maintaining a relaxed atmosphere.”
