At the location in Ballarat, close to Melbourne, the two were struck by falling rocks 500 meters (1,640 feet) beneath on Wednesday afternoon local time.
A “safety pod” adjacent provided shelter for an additional 29 miners, and the injured guy was rescued nearly four hours later.
The event has drawn harsh criticism from a labor union, and a workplace regulator will look into it.
Early on Thursday morning, the body of a 37-year-old man was found at the area, which is roughly 3 km from the mine’s entrance.
Authorities said that his injured 21-year-old colleague had been taken out of the mine the previous evening after being stabilized by paramedics.
