Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies are on track for a sweeping win in the Bihar state elections, with early trends showing the coalition leading in nearly 200 out of 243 seats. Counting began early Thursday morning, and although numbers may shift slightly, the opposition—currently ahead in fewer than 40 constituencies—appears unlikely to stage a comeback.
This election followed a hotly debated voter roll revision that the opposition claimed would disenfranchise legitimate voters. Both the BJP and the Election Commission firmly rejected those allegations. Polling took place on 6 and 11 November, recording an impressive 66.91% turnout, the highest since Bihar’s first elections in 1951.
(United),Most exit polls had already forecast a strong victory for the BJP-led alliance, which includes its key partner, Janata Dal (United) led by outgoing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Their main challengers were the Congress, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and several smaller parties.
strategist-turned-politicianWhile BJP leaders celebrated the early leads and thanked voters, the opposition has yet to respond. The elections also marked the debut of political strategist–turned–politician Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, which is not leading in any seat so far.
footholds. The Bihar results are expected to set the tone for crucial upcoming state elections in West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu—regions where the BJP continues to push for greater political foothold.
With over 74 million voters, Bihar remains India’s poorest state, with large-scale migration driven by limited job opportunities. Despite the BJP’s national dominance, Bihar is one of the few states where the party has yet to form a government independently.
