A Golden Start Turns Into a Life Moment
Breezy Johnson’s Winter Olympics began with a gold medal in the downhill. A few days later, it brought something even more personal. Her boyfriend, Watkins, proposed to her at the finish line in Cortina.
Wearing a Team USA jacket, Watkins stepped into the finish area and dropped to one knee. Athletes and officials from several countries watched as he held up a silver ring with a blue stone in the center. Johnson covered her mouth in shock and quickly grew emotional. After she said yes, the two embraced while teammates cheered around them.
Along with the ring, Watkins gave her a carved wooden piece. It featured a lyric from Taylor Swift’s song “The Alchemy,” reading, “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?” He later said he had planned the proposal for a year. Still, he admitted the moment exceeded anything he had imagined.
Johnson had suspected a proposal might happen. She shared that she had always dreamed of getting engaged at the Olympics. Winning gold at the same Games made the moment even more special.
“I mean, that was my hope,” she said. She added that everything happening at once felt overwhelming in the best way.
A Day of Highs and Lows
Earlier that same day, Johnson experienced disappointment on the slopes. She crashed during the super G final and did not finish the race. More than a dozen skiers failed to complete the event after crashes or mistakes on the course.
Despite that setback, the engagement shifted the mood. Watkins said he hoped to carry out the proposal in the finish area just as he had pictured. In the end, everything fell into place.
The couple planned to celebrate with family and friends in Cortina. They also hoped to visit Livigno, another Olympic venue, for a short getaway.
Johnson later said that sharing success with someone you love makes it even better.
Career Highlights and Personal Journey
Johnson’s gold medal in the downhill placed her alongside Lindsey Vonn as the only American women to win the event. Vonn claimed the title in 2010.
She also competed in the team combined event earlier in the week. Johnson posted the fastest downhill time. However, her teammate Mikaela Shiffrin struggled in the slalom portion, and they finished just outside the medals in fourth place.
In 2022, Johnson publicly came out as bisexual. She explained on social media that she wanted to live openly and honestly.
Through wins, setbacks, and now an engagement, this Olympics has become one of the most memorable chapters of her life.
