With Bart Verbruggen playing 13 league games and Jason Steele playing 15, Seagulls manager Roberto de Zerbi has broken a Premier League record by switching goalkeepers 17 times already in 2023–24. Neither player has started more than three games in a run across all competitions.
This is undoubtedly a novel concept; no Premier League team has attempted it previously, and the few that have come close have done it for unrelated reasons. Previously, injuries, form, or both were the main factors influencing changes.
While it’s interesting to watch, I wanted to find out if Brighton has had any success with it and why they are even trying. While Steele, at 33, obviously has a lot more experience than Verbruggen, who is only 21 and appears to have a lot of undeveloped skill that needs to be developed, it’s interesting to note how similar the two goalkeepers’ performances are.
