In an effort to discourage illegal immigration, Britain said on Friday that it would implement a mandatory digital identification program for British citizens and residents beginning a new job.
In a statement announcing the action, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “It will make it tougher to work illegally in this country, making our borders more secure,” as previously reported.
According to polls, immigration is the #1 issue among British voters, and Starmer is under tremendous pressure to prevent illegal migrants from crossing the border in small boats from France.
Political opponents have criticized the ideas, which the administration had previously stated it was exploring, claiming they could violate civil liberties and would not dissuade migrants.
