The 74-year-old American legend was chosen on Tuesday to be the next recipient of the academy’s highest honor in appreciation of the influence his career has had on the UK’s cultural scene.
The Born to Run performer has won 20 Grammy Awards, an Oscar, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and more than 140 million recordings sold worldwide.
“In addition to recognizing my songwriting, the award stands as a tribute to the fans and friends who have supported me and my work for the last 50 years,” Springsteen said in a statement.
The UK’s professional association of music creators, the Academy, inducts Springsteen as its 27th fellow, joining the ranks of previously inducted songwriting luminaries Sir Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, Sir Elton John, and Sting.
Not only will he be the only songwriter from outside of Britain, but American composer John Adams and French conductor Pierre Boulez are also recipients of the fellowship.
The Ivor Awards were first presented in 1956 and are named for the Welsh composer, actor, and entertainer of the early 20th century, Ivor Novello.
