In an attempt to advance a two-state solution and in response to the Gaza conflict, Britain, Canada, and Australia all recognized a Palestinian state on Sunday. However, this action is certain to infuriate Israel and its principal supporter, the United States.
With their vote, the three countries joined over 140 others who support the Palestinians’ goal of creating an independent country outside of Israeli-occupied territory.
“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine,” stated Prime Minister Benjamin Starmer.
In addition to Canada and Australia, more nations are anticipated to recognize a Palestinian state this week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
