Stefanos Tsitsipas, the 11th seed from Greece, defeated American Frances Tiafoe, 6-3, 6-3.
Alcaraz did not lose a set on his way to capturing the Indian Wells title last year, but he had to come back from a set down in his first encounter against Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
He had no such troubles against the 31st seed Auger-Aliassime.
