Carol Kirkwood, the beloved weather presenter, became emotional on live TV as she announced she would be leaving her long-standing role after more than 25 years. Hugging her co-hosts, she said, “This is really hard for me to say because I love my job.”
The 63-year-old, who began her career in 1998, will leave in April. She shared her excitement about spending more time with her husband Steve Randall and exploring new travel opportunities. “I want to spend more time with my gorgeous husband. We’re ships that pass in the night, so I’m really looking forward to it,” she said.
A Career Spanning Decades
Kirkwood started as a production secretary and assistant before moving into radio, including stints on Radio Scotland, Radio 2, and Radio 4. Her on-screen career began later, after training at The Weather Channel in the US for its UK edition.
She trained with the Met Office and became a well-known weather presenter. Over the years, she has delivered daily forecasts and live updates from major events, including Wimbledon, the Chelsea Flower Show, and royal ceremonies.
Beyond the Weather Desk
Carol’s career extends beyond weather reporting. She has appeared on The One Show and competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, reaching week eight with partner Pasha Kovalev. She has also won Best TV Weather Presenter at the TV and Radio Industries Club Awards multiple times.
Known for her friendly demeanor, she has earned the trust of millions of viewers. Occasionally, she has gone viral for lighthearted on-air moments, like being upstaged by a dog.
Personal Life and Future Plans
Originally from Morar on Scotland’s west coast, Carol married police officer Steve Randall in 2023. She explained that leaving her role would allow her to spend more quality time with him. “I’ve loved my job, but I love my husband more,” she said.
She also plans to travel and enjoy life outside the studio. Fans can expect her to remain influential in media, but on her own schedule.
