Across Europe and the UK, cars are steadily increasing in width, length, and weight — a trend now described as “carspreading.” While many drivers prefer larger vehicles for comfort, safety, and style, several major cities say these cars are creating new challenges for urban roads and the environment.

Paris Moves to Reduce Heavy Cars

Paris, a city already known for its traffic issues, has introduced strict new rules aimed at cutting pollution and easing congestion. In October 2024, the city raised parking charges for heavy vehicles after a public vote. The cost of parking large cars in central Paris jumped from €6 to €18 per hour, and a six-hour stay rose from €75 to €225.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said large vehicles produce more pollution and the higher charges will support the city’s environmental efforts. A few months later, officials reported a nearly two-thirds drop in the number of heavy cars parking on Paris streets.

UK Cities Consider Similar Measures

The idea is spreading. Cardiff has approved higher parking permit fees for cars weighing more than 2,400kg, saying heavy vehicles wear down roads faster, create more emissions, and cause more severe accidents. Only a few models are affected for now, but the city plans to reduce the weight threshold over time. Several other UK councils are reviewing similar steps.

Drivers Say Big Cars Meet Their Needs

Despite growing restrictions, many car owners argue that large vehicles are essential for their daily lives. Guildford resident Matt Mansell says his Land Rover Defender gives him enough room for his three children, their equipment, and materials for his work.

Families living in rural areas or places with limited public transport also say they rely on SUVs to manage school runs, sports gear, and long-distance travel.

SUV Demand Keeps Growing

—aSUVs are one of the main reasons cars are getting larger. Once considered a niche category, they now dominate the market, making up 59% of new car sales across Europe — a huge increase from just 13.2% in 2011.

Drivers often choose SUVs because they sit higher, offer better visibility, and provide more room for families, children, and older passengers.

Carmakers Benefit From Larger Vehicles

Manufacturers are happy to follow this trend. Bigger vehicles tend to bring higher profits, even though many SUVs share the same structure as smaller cars. Luxury brands like Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini now rely heavily on their SUV lines for sales.

Safety Upgrades Also Make Cars Bigger

Experts say cars have also grown because modern safety requirements demand stronger frames, more airbags, and better crash protection. As a result, even classic models like the VW Golf have become significantly larger and heavier compared to their early versions.
