According to information obtained by Sky News, Mr. Read, who joined the government-owned business more than five years ago, has chosen to go.
Initially, he took a temporary leave of absence from the position in order to concentrate on providing evidence for the investigation into the IT scandal that had an impact on hundreds of sub-postmasters.
“It has been a great privilege to work with colleagues and Postmasters during the past five years in what has been an extraordinarily challenging time for the business and for Postmasters,” Mr. Read said in a statement confirming his departure, which was confirmed after Sky News reported that it was coming.
Even if there is still more to be done for this outstanding UK institution, the process of rebuilding the connection with postmasters is well under way, and we will keep working to promote justice and reparation for postmasters.”
Henry Staunton, the Post Office’s former chairman, had accused Mr. Read of being obsessed with his salary package, which had led to long-standing criticism of his leadership.
