ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa stated on Wednesday that the Islamabad High Court judges’ letter is being taken “very seriously” and that the Supreme Court will not stand for any meddling in legal matters.
The top justice went on to say that the letter does not address the Supreme Court because it refers to the Supreme Judicial Council.
During the hearing of the SC’s suo motu notice on the letter submitted by the judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) citing accusations of intelligence agency intrusion in judicial affairs, CJP Isa made a statement.
Seven judges from the Supreme Court are conducting the hearing. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa is leading the group, which also includes Justices Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Yahya Afridi, Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Athar Minallah, and Justice Musarrat Hilali and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan.
The hearing is being conducted in real time by the SC.
CJP Isa stated at the hearing, “Judges have to be certain they are safe.”
The chief justice declared that he was not authorized to use any other court’s contempt power.
“This power will be exercised by the court that is in contempt.”
The chief justice declared, “There is zero tolerance on the independence of judiciary.”
The judge questioned the attorneys, though, after they asked for a suo motu notice in the aforementioned case, given that the court had not convened in full for four years.
