While emphasizing the need to address illegal immigration, a Republican state representative in Indiana seeking Congress has sponsored bills that would have given individuals in the country illegally driving “cards” and in-state tuition rates.

State Senator Mark Messmer, a candidate for Indiana’s 8th Congressional District, stated on his campaign website, “I am devoted to tackling pressing issues like illegal immigration, safeguarding our liberties, protecting the unborn, balancing the federal budget, stopping the woke agenda, and growing jobs in Southwest Indiana.”

Nonetheless, in 2022, Messmer co-sponsored SB200, which allowed undocumented immigrants residing in the state to “apply for a driving card learner’s permit and driving card to obtain driving privileges.”

Liberal activists staged protests when the bill was ultimately rejected before it could be put to a vote in a committee. According to a local ABC affiliate WRTV story from February 2022, up to 100,000 illegal immigrants are believed to be driving in Indiana without a license.

Additionally, Messmer is a co-author of SB135, a bill that is currently pending that would let undocumented immigrants to live in Indiana and pay the same tuition as state residents. This means that out-of-state students attending an Indiana university may wind up paying more in tuition than an undocumented immigrant.

An affidavit stating that an illegal immigrant student has applied for legal status with the U.S. government or that they will do so must be submitted to the college or university of their choosing in order for them to be eligible.

The law, which is presently being reviewed in committee, would target illegal immigrants who do not meet the requirements for the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program and would not offer grants or financial help to any qualifying immigrants.

Joe Biden’s border policies have posed serious problems, necessitating the resolution of the ramifications for states like Indiana. The law enforcement community has supported Senator Messmer’s prior legislation, which sought to mitigate the effects of unfettered illegal immigration, Messmer’s campaign manager Adam Johnson told Fox News Digital.
