Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho has requested that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) look into the home heating sector, as was originally reported by News last week.
It comes amid worries over how Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, and Baxi—which together hold 90% of the market—will react to government proposals for companies to reach electric heat pump sales targets or risk fines.
A ‘boiler tax’ brought on by the government’s policy, according to the industry, increased the price of new gas boilers by almost £100 in January.
Following heated discussion between ministers in the Department of Energy and Net Zero, the goals have now been pushed back 12 months, to April 2025.
Boiler makers will be required to sell a percentage of electric heat pumps under the Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM), which was initially set to launch next month. This percentage will increase to 25% by 2028.
