Several underwater cables in the Red Sea were destroyed over the weekend, resulting in severe latency and connectivity problems that affected internet services throughout Asia and the Middle East.
Microsoft acknowledged that there were delays in its Azure cloud services, affecting users in the United Arab Emirates, India, and Pakistan. According to the corporation, applications now experience higher delay as a result of traffic being redirected via alternate network pathways.
Approximately 95% of global internet traffic is carried via underwater fiber optic cables, including everything from banking and streaming to vital military communications. With an estimated 17% of all internet traffic, the Red Sea is regarded as one of the most significant chokepoints.
