Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s information adviser, attacked the proposed constitutional modifications on Wednesday, calling them a “insult to the Constitution and democracy”.
“How can constitutional modifications be introduced by the present parliament? In a statement, the CM’s counsel questioned whether the legislation was valid because it was both incomplete and unconstitutional.
The continuing controversy over the constitutional package drafted by the ruling coalition, which purportedly included clauses extending the retirement age of judges of the high court and supreme court, is a backdrop for Barrister Saif’s remarks.
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other allies of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had supported the PML-N’s delay in bringing the constitutional reforms into parliament despite claiming to have secured the “magic number” earlier.
