ISLAMABAD: The leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has declined to back the government’s plan to raise the retirement age and prolong the term of judges, casting doubt on the government’s planned package of constitutional amendments.
Due to this trend, the ruling coalition has had a difficult time getting enough support in parliament to pass the modifications that would significantly alter Pakistan’s judicial and parliamentary systems.
Sources claim that although some government allies and opposition groups, including as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have offered conditional support for the establishment of a constitutional court, they are still at odds over the extension of justices’ terms.
This came about as a result of the special parliamentary committee meeting that was convened to deliberate on the package but ended without a consensus.
