The promotion ceremony took place at the Pentagon on January 15, and he was honored to have Secretary of War Pete Hegseth pin his new rank.
Morgan said the experience brought a mix of humility and pride. After more than 20 years of service while keeping up a busy music career, he feels grateful to represent service members and highlight the honor of wearing the uniform. He described the military as one of the few places where pride and humility exist together naturally.
He also encouraged fellow service members to reach out if they want senior officers involved in promotions. For him, the timing worked because he was in Washington, D.C., working on Army music programs and suicide prevention efforts when the opportunity arose.
Morgan first reenlisted in the Army Reserve in 2023 at age 59. Before that, he served 17 years with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, reaching the rank of staff sergeant. His military experience includes Airborne, air assault, and rappel master certifications. Despite his commitments, he continued touring, releasing new music, and supporting the USO, earning the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal and the USO Merit Award.
Reflecting on his career, Morgan said he left the Army initially to focus on music, as managing both roles was challenging early on. Today, with a strong team supporting his music business, he feels equipped to balance both his civilian and military duties. “I’m smarter now and can take advantage of the resources the military offers,” he said.
