The Golden State Warriors confirmed on Wednesday that assistant coach Dejan Milojević passed away on Wednesday, following a heart attack on Tuesday during a private team dinner in Salt Lake City.
The Warriors coach Steve Kerr posted on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “We are absolutely devastated by Dejan’s sudden passing.”
“His family, friends, and those of us who had the great pleasure of working with him are going through a very trying time. This is a devastating and tragic blow for everyone connected to the Warriors.
As per USA Today, the Warriors, captained by 46-year-old Milojević, made their way to Salt Lake City on Monday to get ready for their Wednesday encounter against the Utah Jazz.
But following Milojevic’s unexpected death, the National Basketball Association (NBA) made the decision to postpone the game, and it will now be rescheduled.
“The NBA mourns the sudden passing of Golden State assistant coach Dejan Milojević, a beloved colleague and dear friend to so many in the global basketball community,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.
Silver mentioned Milojević’s NBA championship win in 2022 and complimented him for coaching some of the world’s top players.
The Serbian coach joins the Warriors coaching staff in 2021 after holding head coaching positions in Serbia and Montenegro.
