NEW DELHI: The death toll from Monday’s devastating car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort has risen to 12, with more than 30 others injured, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
—nowIndia’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a full-scale probe into the blast — now the most serious security incident in the capital since 2011. The explosion shook the crowded Old Delhi area, a short distance from the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivers his annual Independence Day address.
Calling the attack a “conspiracy,” Modi vowed that those responsible would face “strict justice.” Home Minister Amit Shah also directed security agencies to track down every individual involved in the plot during a high-level meeting held after the incident.
Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that authorities are examining possible links between the Delhi car blast and the recent arrest of seven men from Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). These suspects were detained just hours before the explosion, during raids that uncovered 2,900 kg of bomb-making material, two rifles, and two pistols across IIOJK, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
—asInvestigators are now focusing on whether the car’s driver was connected to one of the arrested men—reportedly a doctor — as part of a broader network operating across multiple states.
Following the Delhi blast, IIOJK police conducted hundreds of raids, detaining nearly 500 individuals for questioning, though most were later released.
Officials from the NIA and Delhi Police have not yet issued formal statements, but the probe continues under India’s anti-terrorism laws, with multiple security agencies coordinating efforts.
