Disney has agreed to invest $1 billion in OpenAI, marking a groundbreaking deal that allows fans to use over 200 of its famous characters in OpenAI’s ChatGPT and video tool Sora. This partnership is the first major studio licensing arrangement with OpenAI, signaling a major shift in the entertainment industry’s embrace of AI.
The deal covers characters from Disney classics like Moana, Zootopia, and Encanto, as well as iconic figures from Star Wars and Marvel, including Luke Skywalker and Deadpool. Beloved Disney staples like Mickey and Minnie Mouse are also part of the agreement. However, Disney clarified that the deal does not include the voices or likenesses of actors.
Bob Iger, Disney CEO, emphasized that this collaboration represents a careful and responsible expansion of Disney’s storytelling through AI technology. Fans are expected to begin generating images and videos of these characters in ChatGPT and Sora by early 2026.
The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny over AI’s impact on creative industries. OpenAI’s Sora tool has faced criticism for enabling offensive deepfakes, including controversial depictions of public figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Stephen Hawking. OpenAI has paused some content generation and is working to implement stronger safeguards to prevent misuse.
In parallel, Disney has also taken legal action against Google, sending a cease-and-desist letter accusing the company of copyright infringement on a large scale.
This landmark investment highlights Disney’s proactive approach to AI while addressing ethical concerns. By allowing controlled use of its characters, Disney aims to expand fan engagement and creative storytelling while safeguarding the integrity of its brand.
