A recent $1 billion deal between Disney and OpenAI is stirring unease among creative professionals. The agreement will allow fans to create images and videos featuring over 200 Disney characters, including Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars icons, using OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Sora tools.
The union representing media workers, SAG-AFTRA, which covers around 170,000 professionals worldwide, expressed significant concern. Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland highlighted the worry over the potential impact on human creativity, even though the deal explicitly prohibits using real actors’ likenesses, voices, or images.
