A drone attack forced the shutdown of the Khor Mor gas field, one of the largest in Iraqi Kurdistan, causing extensive power outages across the northern region, officials and field engineers reported on Wednesday.
The Natural Resources and Electricity ministries confirmed in a joint statement that gas supplies to all regional power stations have been halted. Kurdish authorities warned that power generation could drop by 3,000 megawatts following the incident.
The strike hit storage tanks at the site, sparking a fire and injuring several workers. Firefighting teams are still on-site, while engineers estimate repairs to the main liquid-gas storage depot could take two to three days.
“A drone struck a key gas storage facility, causing significant damage, and a fire is still burning,” said a worker sheltering at the site.
Videos shared by Kurdish media Rudaw showed thick smoke from the field and partial blackouts in Erbil.
Investigations are underway by local authorities and Dana Gas, a UAE energy company operating the field along with its partner Crescent Petroleum under the Pearl Consortium.
The Iraqi Security Media Cell condemned the attack as a “treacherous terrorist act” and warned it would worsen power shortages in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. No group has claimed responsibility.
This marks the second drone attack targeting Khor Mor in recent days, after Kurdish forces intercepted another drone on Sunday before it reached the site.
