A deep tunnel drainage project that will shield the emirate from flooding for the next century has been cleared for immediate deployment in Dubai.
The decision comes after April 2024 saw record-breaking rainfall that overloaded drainage infrastructure and caused chaos in the city. Long-term planning were expedited by the extraordinary incident, which highlighted the need for more intelligent and future-ready infrastructure.
The rains was a wake-up call, according to Eng. Marwan Bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of the Dubai Municipality, who was speaking at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum 2025.
He praised the cooperation of public and private organizations throughout the crisis and said, “The recent rain incident may be a blessing from which we have learned a lot.”
