The United Nations reports that around eight million people in Sudan have been displaced from their homes nine months into a brutal conflict, and it is urgently requesting more assistance to deal with this tragedy.
As High Commissioner Filippo Grandi wrapped up his tour to Ethiopia, where many of the displaced have fled, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees revealed the concerning figure on Wednesday. According to the UNHCR, there is a persistent lack of necessary funding.
Over 100,000 people have entered Ethiopia from Sudan since April 2023, including nearly 47,000 refugees and asylum seekers. There were already almost fifty thousand Sudanese refugees in the nation.
Grandi examined the UNHCR’s and the Ethiopian government’s assistance efforts and demanded “urgent and additional support to meet their needs.”
A sizable influx of Sudanese refugees has also been received by five other nearby nations. Since April, almost 500,000 individuals have migrated to Chad. Every day, over 1,500 individuals enter South Sudan.
Almost half of Sudan’s 49 million people need humanitarian assistance as a result of the most recent round of bloodshed in the 20-year conflict. According to UN estimates, 12,000 people would have died by the end of 2023,
